Understanding how RV solar actually works
Most caravans and motorhomes come with a basic setup from the factory, usually:
A single 100Ah 12V battery and sometimes a small solar panel (often 40W–150W depending on model and year)
This setup is fine for short stays at powered sites or light off-grid use — typically around 1–3 days depending on how you travel.
But here’s the important part most people don’t realise:
Solar panels don’t run your RV — they recharge your battery.
Your battery is what actually powers everything in your 12V system.
That includes your:
Lights, water pump, fridge (in many cases), toilet systems, charging devices and accessories
So if your battery capacity or solar input is too small, you simply run out of stored power.
Why most factory setups fall short
Factory solar systems are designed for light use, not extended off-grid travel.
What usually limits people is:
- not enough battery capacity
- not enough solar to recharge during the day
- increasing power use (fridge, coffee machines, Starlink, laptops, etc.)
The result is the same:
You either have to plug in more often, or cut your trip short.
What a properly designed off-grid system changes
A correctly sized solar and battery setup allows you to:
- stay off-grid for longer without worrying about power
- run modern appliances comfortably
- reduce reliance on powered campsites
- travel with more freedom and flexibility
- increases battery life
But the right setup depends entirely on how you travel.
